Parents of a newborn with a broken arm have been charged with aggravated assault after Lethbridge police alleged it was due to “significant force.”

Lethbridge police say Child and Family Services requested police assistance after receiving a report of an injured three-week-old
baby girl at Chinook Regional Hospital in late November.

Police say the investigation determined the baby’s arm was broken “as a result of significant force.”

They add the baby is no longer in the care of the parents and is now with child services.

Officers arrested a 33-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man on March 1 without incident. They say the accused aren’t being named to protect the identity of the victim.

The pair face aggravated assault charges, failing to provide necessaries of life, and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

Police released the father and say he is set to appear in court on March 8, but the mother remains in custody. She is scheduled to appear in court on March 5.
