ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A two-handed shove to the face of a Rays player has landed Blue Jays relief pitcher Genesis Cabrera a three-game suspension.

As well, Cabrera was handed an undisclosed fine for the incident, which caused both benches to clear as the seventh inning concluded in the Rays 5-1 win over the Jays on Saturday.

The suspension was scheduled to begin on Sunday but is on hold pending an appeal by the Jays.

Cabrera aggressively shoved Rays shortstop Jose Caballero after a play at third base that started with the two players jawing at each other.

Afterwards, Cabrera dismissed the fracas as a “heat of the moment” deal.

“We kind of over reacted a little bit,” Cabrera said. “He kind of looked at me and I just reacted.”Emotions. It’s part of the game sometimes. But it’s over. It’s where it ends. Right there.”
