TRON: Ares has been in development for over a decade. After Tron: Legacy hit theatres in 2010, work on a third film was announced but two prior ideas were scrapped. The movie also recycled through a number of different directors, before settling on Joachim Ronning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil).

The new entry, which is written by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne and is slated to open in cinemas next year, casts Leto as a “highly sophisticated” artificial intelligence program that makes its way from the digital world into our reality.

The original groundbreaking TRON launched in 1982 and centred on Jeff Bridges’ computer engineer Kevin Flynn, who is transported into the digital realm where he finds himself in the midst of a battle between opposing programs. A 2010 sequel, TRON: Legacy, followed Flynn’s son (played by Garrett Hedlund) as he searches for his dad in the cyberworld.

A longtime fan of the franchise, Leto, who is also producing the film, has been attached to the third entry for close to a decade.

With filming now underway in Vancouver, TRON: Ares also stars Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson.

“I’m excited to be part of the Tron franchise and bring this new film to fans around the world,” Ronning said in a press release. “TRON: Ares builds upon the legacy of cutting-edge design, technology and storytelling. Now more than ever, it feels like the right time to return to the Grid.”

Tron: Ares will open in theatres next year.
