What can you even say at this point?
You know the drill, a new series started, the Blue Jays lost the opener for the fourth straight series with the bats going cold. This time, they lost to the American League Central-leading Cleveland Guardians 3-1 to bring their record to 33-36.
Like most games, the Blue Jays allowed a run to score early, as Daniel Schneemann doubled in Will Brennan to make it 1-0 in the top of the second. Brennan followed that up with a home run in the top of the fourth for the game-winning run.

Cleveland jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth, as Andrés Giménez singled to score Brayan Rocchio. Toronto’s only run came thanks to a Davis Schneider single in the bottom of the sixth.

Things worth mentioning…
This team shouldn’t even be thinking about buying at the deadline. Simply put, the way this team is going, there is not a chance that they’ll make the postseason, much less contend. Against opponents under .500, they are 16-15, and have a 16-21 record against opponents above .500. Things can change, namely the approach or personnel, but this team’s issues run deep.
Kevin Gausman gave this team a chance to win, finishing with a line of 5.1 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K with a home run given up to move his season ERA to 4.08.
The bullpen also had a good day, Génesis Cabrera struck out a batter in an inning and two thirds, Brendon Little pitched a scoreless inning and a third, and Zach Pop had a clean two thirds of an inning pitched. Toronto’s loss was certainly not because of pitching.
It was a rough day for the bats though, as the Blue Jays registered two hits. Ernie Clement essentially carried the offense with two singles, and scored thanks to a Davis Schneider single. That’s it.

Up next: The Blue Jays are in danger of their second-consecutive series loss. The first chance to avoid that is on Saturday, as that game starts at 3:07 PM ET. It’s the fifth spot in the rotation, so I’d imagine Bowden Francis will start.
