The first debate in the Alberta NDP leadership race was mostly a civil affair Thursday.

Around 500 people turned out to the debate in Lethbridge to hear from former Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi, MLAs Kathleen Ganley, Sarah Hoffman and Jody Calahoo Stonehouse, as well as Alberta Federation of Labour president Gil McGowan.

Several issues were brought up at the debate, including health care. the environment and the ties between the provincial N-D-P and the federal party.

This was the first of three debates for the Alberta NDP, who are seeking a new leader after Rachel Notley announced in January she plans to step down.

The next two debates will happen in Calgary in May, with the final one scheduled for Edmonton in June.
