The mayor of Harrison Hot Springs has resigned.

Ed Wood made the surprise announcement in a brief statement on the village website Monday morning.

“I personally would like to thank both the corporate officer and the chief financial officer for their professionalism during our time together,” wrote Wood. “They have demonstrated integrity, respect and accountability of which I hold strong to.

“To the members of the public, it has been an honour to be your mayor.”

The village council has been roiled by controversy and in-fighting in the past couple of years, leading to a failed attempt by Wood in March to dissolve council. A year before that, all four village councillors supported a motion of non-confidence in the mayor.

According to Elections B.C., “there is no recall process for mayors or councillors” in the province. It says any recall initiative it oversees has to apply to provincial MLAs.

A number of other B.C. municipalities, including Kamloops and Lions Bay, have had similar struggles in recent years as a mayor and councillors squabbled.

In a few cases special advisers from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs have been brought in to try to resolve the issues, including last year in Harrison Hot Springs, but not much came of those reports and the dysfunction has continued there and elsewhere.

More to come …
