With the planned departure of another current councillor, Saskatoon’s city council is guaranteed to look drastically different by the end of the year.

After two terms on council, Sarina Gersher announced on Thursday that she will not seek reelection in Ward 8 in the upcoming campaign.

Gersher was first elected in 2016, receiving 49 per cent of the vote, then was reelected with 65 per cent of the vote in 2020.

“It has been an incredible privilege to represent Ward 8 neighbours at City Hall for the past eight years,” Gersher said in a statement.

“Working in a political environment can come with challenges but I have been very grateful to work with this council and administration.”

Gersher is the third current council member to announce their pending departure.

Last month, Ward 3 councillor David Kirton said he will not seek reelection. In January, Mayor Charlie Clark confirmed that he will not seek a third term as mayor.

Gersher on Thursday said she is most proud of progress made on reconciliation and inclusion, planning for the city’s growth with items including new transit corridors and balancing infill with new developments, and furthering the Bus Rapid Transit system.

Gersher said she feels there have been positive steps in neighbourhood safety in her ward; investment in infrastructure for roads, sidewalks, parks and waste management; and support for the local economy and environment.

“We have done this by staying connected with one another,” she said.

Election day is scheduled for Nov. 13.
