The early years of Calgary were a time when most men wouldn’t dare venture downtown without donning a hat. But, if a gentleman chose the wrong chapeau, he had to be prepared for some ribbing — and even a story in the local newspaper! The below story (from the Calgary Herald archives) told the entire city in 1928 about a local citizen who decided to wear a straw hat, weeks before the “usual straw hat season.”
Over the years, long-time Herald researcher/librarian Norma Marr prepared a feature called The H Files, in which she looked back at a myriad of Calgary news events. Here are some of her instalments from April 1998, including the story of the straw hat.
