Eight Albertans — including three from Calgary — will be bestowed with the province’s highest honour this October.
The Alberta Order of Excellence is the highest citizen honour that the provincial government can grant, celebrating Albertans who’ve made significant contributions to the “greater good.”
“While the recipients this year have made stellar contributions to many different fields, what they share is a dedication and commitment to service and leadership. May they inspire us all to build compassionate and thoughtful communities,” said Lt.-Gov. Salma Lakhani.

Among this year’s local recipients are Will Ferguson, a Calgary novelist and travel writer, Nancy Southern, the CEO of Calgary-based ATCO, Garnette Sutherland, a neurosurgery professor at the University of Calgary.
Cochrane’s Don Begg, a renowned sculptor who works out of the Studio West Bronze Foundry, will also receive the honour. His most recent work, a sculpture to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings, was unveiled in France this week.
Also to be named to the order are former Alberta cabinet minister and ex-Edmonton mayor Stephen Mandel, former Alberta chief justice Catherine Fraser, Edmonton pharmaceutical executive and inventor Robert Foster and Fairview’s Kim Reuther, an advocate for the presence of and training for automated external defibrillators in schools.
An induction ceremony will be held in Edmonton in October, bringing the full membership of the Alberta Order of Excellence to 220.
