There’s no better time to prove it than this weekend’s fundraiser/variety show, which headlines a wide range of activities taking place around Regina.

1. Show some love for the Artesian

The venerable performance venue — home to community programming in the realm of art, music, theatre, comedy and more — is hosting its most important show of the year on Saturday night.

The annual “I Love Artesian” fundraiser includes a performance by award-winning indie rock band The Garrys of Saskatoon. They’re joined by ka lok and DJ Hendrika, along with poetry by Cat Abenstein and comedy sketches from hosts Kris Alvarez and Jayden Pfeifer.

“We take immense pride in the impact we have on our community and the unforgettable experiences we create within our venue …,” says the Artesian’s website. “Once a year we put together an event specifically to celebrate our community and raise funds to support the work we do. By buying a ticket and/or making a donation, you are helping ensure that we can continue to enrich lives in our community through the arts.”

Meanwhile, Australia-born singer/guitar virtuoso Daniel Champagne is holding a twin bill at the Artesian on Friday. The second show was added at 5:30 p.m. after the 8 p.m. performance sold out.

2. Fasten your seatbelts

Classic car enthusiasts should buckle up for a big weekend in Regina.

The 56th annual Majestics Car Show runs Saturday (9 a.m.-9 p.m.) and Sunday (9 a.m.-5 p.m.) at the International Trade Centre (more info at majesticscarclub.com).

Elsewhere on the grounds at Real District, the Antique Auto Association of Regina is holding its 50th annual Swap Meet on Saturday (9 a.m.-5 p.m.) at Banner Hall and the Ag East Building. The event features a collector car sale as well as parts, literature, supplies and services for antiques, special interest vehicles, classics, sports cars, street rods, trucks, tractors, and motorcycles.

3. Nothing but a Good time

Matthew Good and His Band are coming to the Casino Regina Show Lounge on Saturday as part of his latest national tour.

The multi-platinum singer from Vancouver is best known as the frontman of the Matthew Good Band, which was one of the more successful alternative rock groups in Canada during the 1990s before its breakup in 2002. The band is known for hits like Everything Is Automatic, Indestructible, Apparitions, Hello Time Bomb, Load Me Up, and Strange Days.

Good has 21 career Juno nominations and four wins — two with his former band (best rock album and best group in 2000), plus two more as a solo artist (best video for 2003’s Weapon, and best rock album for 2011’s Vancouver).

Meanwhile, Canadian comedian Steve Patterson is appearing Friday night at Casino Regina.

4. Off the rails

Regina’s biggest model railroad event is scheduled for Saturday (9 a.m.-5 p.m.) and Sunday (9 a.m.-4 p.m.) at the Callie Curling Club.

The Railfest show and sale features over 25,000 square feet of model layouts, exhibits and vendors. Many train scales are to be on display, including LEGO models.

5. Fabric, Yarn and More Sale

The Regina branch of Grandmothers 4 Grandmothers is set to host a fundraising event Friday (4-8 p.m.) and Saturday (10 a.m.-3 p.m.) at St. James United Church.

The sale features a wide variety of donated items for sewing and working with yarn.

G4G is a non-profit organization that partners with the Toronto-based Stephen Lewis Foundation to raise money for women in Sub-Saharan Africa who care for children orphaned by AIDS.
