Calgary weather is set to warm up for the weekend in time for the official start of summer. Friday is also Indigenous People’s Day, and Calgary has several events planned to celebrate.

Here are five free things for the whole family to do this weekend.

OHSOTO’KINO: Indigenous Peoples Day at Studio Bell

This special event will showcase local Indigenous music, dance and song. The lineup includes Cree Métis recording artist/songwriter, poet and filmmaker Sandra Sutter, nêhiyaw singer-songwriter Wyatt C. Louis and Inuvaluit singer-songwriter Willie Thrasher with his partner Linda Saddleback.

Where: Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre

Sled Alley

Sled Alley is an all day, family-friendly party, part of the Sled Island music festival, offering non-alcoholic beverages, food trucks and ice cream. There will also be an art market, skateboarding and live DJ’s.

Where: Alley behind the Palace Theatre onto 1st Street S.W.

When: Saturday: 12 to 7 p.m.

Capitol Hill School’s Out party

Capitol Hill Community Association is hosting its second annual school’s out party. There will be bouncy castles, a petting zoo, food trucks, games and beer gardens. There will also be live music, featuring the Big Yellow Van and Taiko Midnight.

When: Friday:  6 to 10 p.m.

Cost: Free with donation of non-perishable food item


Aboriginal Awareness Week Family Day and Powwow

Taking place at Calgary’s Stampede grounds, this free event offers breakfast, a market, a children’s corner and a hand games tournament. There will also be Indigenous Idol and a free barbecue following a traditional powwow.

GlobalFest OneWorld picnic

This free mini festival is a sneak peak of GlobalFest, which takes place in August. There will be cultural pavilions, and food trucks, with cultural performances every hour.
