A head-on collision killed five people Thursday in Chapais, a town more than 700 kilometres north of Montreal.

The collision occurred around 1:15 p.m. at the Chapais exit of Route 113, said Sgt. Hugues Beaulieu, a spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec.

The circumstances are “still nebulous,” Beaulieu said. According to initial information, a vehicle veered out of its lane and collided head-on with a van with four people inside that was coming in the opposite direction.

Following the impact, the van caught fire. This van belonged to a Cree organization and was returning to the Cree community of Waswanipi.

The occupants of the van were transported to the Chibougamau hospital centre. All had suffered very serious injuries.

The deaths of the three people were confirmed late Thursday afternoon. A little later in the early evening, the SQ reported that the two other occupants had succumbed to their injuries.

Two SQ experts in accident reconstruction went to the scene to analyze what happened.
