Firefighters contained a major gas leak in the ByWard Market on Tuesday.

Ottawa Fire Service (OFS) says that at around 3:47 p.m. fire crews responded to the 0-100 block of George Street after a vehicle drove into a structure and hit a gas line.

Emergency crews evacuated the building and shut down George Street between Sussex Drrive and Byward Market Square.

Fire crews monitored air quality and opened windows and roof hatches along with high pressurized fans to clear out any gas.

Enbridge confirmed the gas line was completely shut down at 5:14 p.m.

Air quality was confirmed safe before clearing the scene.
