Ultra-fast fashion brand Shein is opening a pop-up store in downtown Vancouver.

The pop-up will run over four days from April 11 to 14 at 804 Granville St., near Robson Street, in the busy Granville Entertainment District.

It’ll temporarily take over a vacant site formerly occupied by Payless Shoes.

Shein, which operates like Amazon, is a sprawling online marketplace that sells clothing, accessories, housewares, toys and electronics from third-party vendors.

The China-founded, Singapore-based company has exploded on social media, particularly on TikTok, where shoppers use the tag #sheinhaul to show off their bargain buys.

The online giant is known for its deeply-discounted merchandise. Its website shows scores of items from tops, dresses and sweaters priced from $10 to $20.

According to the Financial Times, Shein earned US$45 billion in revenue in 2023 and a record US$2 billion in profits, surpassing that of Swedish retailing giant H&M.

But concerns have also been raised about Shein’s labour practices, environmental impact and its business model, which relies on a fast turnaround of trendy, cheap and disposable clothing.

Vancouver is Shein’s fourth pop-up store in Canada. Last year, lines snaked outside its pop-up stores in Toronto, Montreal and Mississauga.

In 2022, the company opened a 170,000-square-foot office and distribution facility in Markham, Ont.
