The farmer’s market will be returning to its 104th Street location between Jasper Avenue and 102 Avenue this summer.
It comes just months after the old Downtown Farmers’ Market declared bankruptcy citing the high cost of maintaining the city-owned building across from the courthouse.
The first year of the new market is funded in part by taxpayers, through the city of edmonton downtown vibrancy fund.
The Downtown Business Association is also chipping in and managing the startup.
But that arrangement is only for this year, as the business association will also work on building a foundation to set the farmers’ market up for a long-term future.
“We do not want this to be one year back on 104th Street and then have it disappear again. So, we’re going to make sure with our partners at the city, with the vendor community, that the downtown farmers market is here to stay, that it stays on 104th Street,” said Puneeta McBryan, the CEO of the Edmonton Downtown Business Association.
“There are some plans underway for a new non-profit to potentially form, and if that doesn’t work out, we are prepared to continue managing the market permanently.”
The Edmonton Downtown Farmers Market is slated to return on June 15 running every Saturday until October 12.
