The death of a Calgary man discovered in a grassfire west of the city is being investigated as a homicide, say Mounties.

On April 3 at around 5:30 p.m., Tsuut’ina firefighters battling a blaze near Hwy. 8 and Range Rd. 40 in Rocky View County about 12 km west of Calgary found the body of a man and Alberta RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit took over the case.

The deceased man has been identified as 33-year-old Kyle Schuiling.

His Facebook page states he worked as an oilpatch roughneck, was living in Vancouver and had studied addictions counselling at a Calgary career college.

An RCMP spokeswoman said she couldn’t say if the grassfire was related to the man’s death, the cause of death or if Schuiling had been reported missing.

“That is information that if released could harm the investigation,” said Cpl. Gina Slaney.

The man’s family released a photo of him in the hopes it’ll help the public in assisting police in finding answers to his death.

Anyone with information regarding Schuiling’s death is asked to contact the Cochrane RCMP at 403-851-8000, or your local police.

Tips can be sent anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the “P3 Tips” app.
