A $7.3-million paving project will begin on Crowchild Trail N.W. today, signalling yet another busy season of roadwork in Calgary.

Crews will be repairing and replacing Crowchild Trail’s asphalt, as well as fixing up or replacing concrete sidewalks, wheelchair ramps, barriers and gutters from Stoney Trail to 32nd Avenue N.W.

The around-the-clock project is all part of the City of Calgary’s $40-million annual paving program, which will see the rehabilitation of nearly 400 kilometres of roadway this year from May to September.

“We know that construction can be disruptive and make travel through the area more challenging,” a city news release stated.

“This construction work is essential to ensure the safety and longevity of our roads and sidewalks, helping to prevent more costly and disruptive reconstruction in the future.”

June and July will see milling and paving of both east and westbound lanes on Crowchild Trail from Brisebois Drive N.W. to Stoney Trail N.W.

Meanwhile, the city says concrete rehabilitation of on- and off-ramps along Crowchild will be occurring in lockstep with concrete barrier replacements along the CTrain line from Brentwood Station to Northland Drive N.W.

City crews will also be upgrading stormwater drainage, replacing concrete and milling and paving both eastbound and westbound lanes of Crowchild Trail at the Shaganappi Trail N.W. overpass.

Weather-permitting, the work is expected to wrap up by mid-September.

All works will be paused during the Calgary Stampede from July 5 to 14.

Motorists are reminded to plan ahead and expect delays and congestion due to reduced lanes, lower speed limits and detours, the city said in its news release. Officials also advise commuters to allow for extra travel time to arrive at their destination, and to carpool, use alternative routes or modes of transportation when possible.

One to two lanes in each direction on Crowchild Trail will remain open during construction and the city said most of the work will be conducted during off-peak hours, seven days a week. Concrete replacement will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., while milling and paving will be completed overnight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Roadwork on ramps is scheduled to occur during nighttime hours, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Pedestrians and cyclists should also be aware of local detours, as pedestrian ramps will be removed and replaced, according to the city.

CTrain operations will not be impacted by the work, but Calgary Transit bus services along the corridor may be affected by ramp closures. More information can be found at calgarytransit.com.
