“That night, divers recovered the missing person. The victim is a child younger than five years old,” she said. “The death was unfortunately declared on site.”

Police have released few details about the event, but say only one boat was involved.

It is not known how many people were aboard the boat or whether the child was wearing a life-jacket, said Brochu-Joubert.

A call was made at about 6:15 p.m. Saturday to emergency services and patrollers with the Antoine-Labelle Regional County Municipality in the Upper Laurentians about the incident. SQ nautical patrol and divers were deployed immediately to try to find the child.

Investigators with the major crimes division of the SQ and reconstruction officers with the force were also sent to the site to determine the circumstances leading to the death of the child. The investigation continued Sunday.
