Edmonton sports fans who enjoy the traditional flyby from the Canadian Armed Forces at sporting events will be in luck on Saturday.
Whether you’re going to the season opener for the Edmonton Elks (2 p.m.) or the Edmonton Riverhawks game (1 p.m.), both will feature flybys from the Canadian military.
A Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) CF-188 Hornet from 4 Wing Cold Lake will conduct a flyby just prior to kickoff at the Elks game on Saturday. At approximately 2:04 p.m. the aircraft will fly over Commonwealth Stadium from north to south at an altitude of no lower than 500 feet above the highest obstacle at ground level.

“Royal Canadian Air Force flybys, requested by organizers of special events, are carefully planned and closely controlled to ensure public safety at all times. The Royal Canadian Air Force is proud to share in special events, which allows us to demonstrate the capabilities of our personnel and aircraft to Canadians,” said a CAF spokesperson in a Friday news release.
At the Riverwaks game, a 408 Tactical Helicopter Squadron will land one CAF CH-146 Griffon helicopter at Remax Field at approximately 1 p.m.
The aircraft will deliver the game ball to the Riverhawks for the team’s Canadian Armed Forces appreciation game. A rehearsal flight consisting of multiple approaches and landings is scheduled to take place Friday at Remax Field.
Meanwhile, CAF members from 1 Combat Engineer Regiment (1 CER) conducted military training between CFB Edmonton and the Riverlot 56 Natural Area near St. Albert on Friday.
Forty CAF members carried rucksacks and wore a combination of military uniforms and unit physical training gear.
The training occurred on trails between CFB Edmonton near Sturgeon Road en route to and from the Riverlot 56 Natural Area.
The training aims to offer endurance training beyond the limits of CFB Edmonton and contribute to readiness for upcoming operations and exercises.
