A Calgary physician has been charged with bilking taxpayers of $2.2 million for work she never performed.

City police say they were contacted by the Alberta Health Services investigative unit after the health authority probed the billing practices of family physician Dr. Shabeena Fazhulla, who works out of the SF Medical Clinic at 1106 Edmonton Trail N.E.

That investigation covered her billing from March 2020 to June 2022, said police.

“It is alleged the doctor was billing the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan for additional time beyond the actual hours worked,” Calgary police said in a press release Wednesday.

The physician is listed as a clinical lecturer at the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine.

Fazhulla, 49, is charged with one count of fraud over $5,000 and is scheduled to appear in court on May 16.

Police are asking anyone with further information on this case to call them at 403-266-1234 or provide tips anonymously at Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-8477, through their website or on the P3 Tips mobile app.
