It was a design contrast for the 33-year-old actress, who has been wearing pink tones during the film’s awards season run, including at January’s Golden Globes (for which she was nominated for best actress in a musical or comedy).

Some fans speculated that Robbie’s outfit signified a subtle protest against the academy for snubbing her in the best actress category. Despite Barbie’s eight nominations, including best picture, best supporting actress for America Ferrera and best supporting actor for Ryan Gosling, Robbie was spurned in the best actress race, alongside the film’s director Greta Gerwig.

Commentators weighed in on her look on Check the Tag’s Instagram account, with one person writing, “She’s always beautiful, but this is a protest dress for not getting the best actress nomination.”

“I think this dress is a protest against the Academy … all black, no accessories, hair and makeup very neutral,” another observed.

“Black because she was snubbed,” a third remarked. “Take a stand girlllll! Don’t give them what they want!”

But in the leadup to the Oscars on Sunday night, Robbie told The Hollywood Reporter she wasn’t planning to ditch pink for good. “I will love it forever,” Robbie told the outlet. “I only have happy memories associated with it. I love the colour. It looks great on everyone.”

After a frenzied awards season thanks to Barbie’s runaway success, Robbie will pause a beat before she sets her sights on a pair of upcoming projects, including A Big Bold Beautiful Journey opposite Colin Farrell and a reunion with Gosling on an Ocean’s 11 prequel.

“I am going to switch my phone off for about a week,” she said. “I’m sure that’s about as long as I could possibly get away with it. And just chill.”
