Amherstburg is poised to get a Starbucks, Taco Bell and Burger King.

The three restaurants should soon be part of a new plaza being built at 527 Sandwich Street South next to a Tim Hortons.

A public meeting on the proposal at a special council meeting May 13 brought no inquiries or complaints from the public. A zoning amendment is required to permit the three restaurants to have outdoor patios, since the property is adjacent to residential land at the rear.

Mayor Michael Prue said the development was “rumoured around the town for weeks and months.”

Said Coun. Don McArthur: “There’s a lot of interest in the community” about the proposal.

While there were no complaints from the public, Prue did express concern during the approvals process about potential traffic problems on the site.

“Sometimes it’s almost impossible to get along Sandwich Street just from one Tim Hortons next door,” Prue said.

“If you’ve ever gone along there in the morning they’re parked right onto the street. Is this a wise place to be putting this?”

But town staff advised council the property has been realigned to provide “a less intrusive situation related to the drive-thru.”

The proponent, Maxwell Abraham, has prepared a full traffic impact study, which was reviewed and approved by a third-party traffic engineer, council was told.

The proposal is consistent with the town’s official plan, a report on the proposal said.

Councillors approved a motion to receive the staff report on the public meeting and the proposal and prepare a report for council to consider. That proposal is expected to come back to council soon.
