RCMP say the woman was stepping off a bus near Calgary Avenue and Main Street at about 11 a.m. last Wednesday when she was assaulted.

According to police, “she was forcefully pushed into the path of a moving bus” as it was departing the bus stop by a woman passing by with a cart full of belongings draped under a white blanket.

Witnesses stepped in and helped the elderly victim, but weren’t able to keep the suspect there until officers arrived.

“This is a very concerning incident that could have led to fatal results given the elderly woman’s age and physical capabilities,” said Penticton RCMP Const. Kelly Brett in a statement. “We are thankful that the bus driver was cognizant that something had occurred and was able to stop the bus prior to anything serious happening.”

The woman suffered minor injuries and is resting at home.

Witnesses who haven’t spoken to police and anyone with dashcam footage is asked to call Penticton RCMP at 250-492-4300.
