Police say two people were killed and three others were sent to hospital after an SUV allegedly sped through a stop sign and struck a sedan on a highway northeast of Edmonton Tuesday morning.

Alberta RCMP say it happened around 12:45 a.m. in the County of Smoky Lake – at Highway 28 and Range Road 130. They believe alcohol or drugs are suspected factors in the collision.

Investigators suspect the SUV was speeding on Range Road 130 when it failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a sedan going east on Highway 28.

Police say the driver of the sedan, a 39-year-old woman from Cold Lake, Alta., was pronounced dead on the scene. Her passenger, a 36-year-old man from Meadow Lake, Sask., was taken to hospital by STARS and later died.

The driver of the SUV was taken to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries, police say. The two passengers in that vehicle were hospitalized with “varying levels of injuries.”
