Provincial police say a passenger on a coach bus has died after being struck by a wheel off a vehicle and three passengers were hospitalized with serious injuries following a three-vehicle crash on the Queen Elizabeth Highway on Friday.

The OPP’s highway safety division said on social media site X early Friday night that all QEW Toronto-bound lanes at Glendale Rd. in Niagara-on-the-Lake were closed due to a crash and that officers were investigating. Lanes were expected to remain closed until at least 11 p.m.

In an update later Friday, police said a wheel came off a passenger van and struck a pickup truck before going through “the windshield of a coach bus.”

Police said a 48-year-old Toronto man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Earlier this week, the OPP said that 120 lives have been lost in collisions investigated by the OPP this year.

“Please share the road safely and responsibly and pay particular attention for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcycles,” an OPP message shared to social media said.

PEDESTRIAN, 92, CRITICALLY INJURED

Earlier on Friday, a 92-year-old pedestrian was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after being struck in downtown Toronto.

Toronto Police responded to a personal injury call at 9:47 a.m. in the Spadina Ave.-Grange Ave. area.

Police said the man was walking northbound on Spadina crossing the intersection of Grange when a 39-year-old man was operating a 2013 silver Acura sedan westbound on Grange.

Cops said the Acura was making a right-hand turn from Grange to northbound Spadina when the pedestrian was struck.

The investigation is ongoing by members of Traffic Services.
