Lawmakers and US officials said the US has been having intensive discussions with Israel about what Gaza might look like after their military campaign is over, though remains fluid.
“It’s still a work in progress,” said Senator Jim Risch, the top Republican on the Senate foreign relations committee and one of the senators who attended a classified briefing on the conflict Wednesday.
Israel does not want to occupy Gaza, he said, adding that the Jewish state wants to eliminate the terrorist group and see if another faction can “step up and move forward. Obviously there would be pushing and shoving . . . in who’s going to run it, but it certainly can’t be run any worse,” he said.
Risch also said that Arab countries are participating in these discussions. “There is actually more thought going into that than actually there is from us and in Israel, and frankly, they will be a lot better at it than we would about how you do this.”
