The Ukrainian President has “signed a decree” to establish a new branch of the army which is solely dedicated to drones.

The drones have been instrumental in attacking Russian forces, armoured vehicles, warships, bridges and storage sites.

Ukrainian forces will create a specialist drone army division that have special units and they will build effective training camps.

Ukraine will scale up the production of drones and drone operations across the battlefields, according to officials in Kyiv.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said, “I have just signed a decree initiating the establishment of a separate branch of our defence forces – the unmanned systems forces.

“This is not a matter of the future, but something that should yield a very concrete result shortly.

“Drones – unmanned systems – have proven their effectiveness in battles on land, in the sky and at sea. Ukraine has truly changed the security situation in the Black Sea with the help of drones.”

Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s minister for digital transformation said that a new branch of drone operators will have a “powerful impetus” to Ukraine’s military technology.

Ukraine’s army chief Valeriy Zaluzhny supports the formation of a new branch and called the development of unarmed weapons systems a “central driver of this war.”

He wrote for CNN, “Crucially, it is these unmanned systems – such as drones – along with other types of advanced weapons, that provide the best way for Ukraine to avoid being drawn into a positional war, where we do not possess the advantage.”
