Sainsbury’s have announced a rise in sales over the Christmas period as shoppers bought bigger volumes of products.

Food and drink inflation has slowed and the supermarket chain revealed they had a fall in trade for clothing and with Argos.

Over the six months to 6 January fuel grew by 4.9% and grocery sales rose by 8.6%, and total retail sales was up by 6.5% in the 16 weeks to 6 January, excluding fuel, and in the full quarter grocery sales was 9.3% higher, Sainsbury’s said.

Simon Roberts, chief executive of Sainsbury’s, said, “We enter 2024 with strong momentum and next month we will share our updated strategy, building on all we’ve done to put food back at the heart of Sainsbury’s over the last three years.

“There is a lot to be excited about and we remain absolutely committed to deliver for our customers, colleagues and shareholders.”
