The Royal Navy are set to test fire a nuclear weapon over the next few days for the first time in seven years.

The £4 billion submarine HMS Vanguard will fire the nuclear weapon after a refit which has taken seven years.

HMS Vanguard which has previously been dubbed the “doomsday” vessel will test fire the weapon from Florida’s Port Canaveral on Tuesday, The Sun reported.

The Royal Navy submarine which can travel for many months undetected can carry up to 16 Trident 2 D5 missiles armed with multiple warheads which are 20 times more powerful than the nuclear bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

The nuclear weapon is expected to travel some 3,720 miles around the world and will then touch down somewhere between West Africa and Brazil.
