Jonathan Reynolds, the shadow business secretary, claimed that “only Labour has a plan to seriously grow the economy” while providing a stable environment for companies.

Britain needed a “partnership of business with unions” to achieve economic growth after years of stuttering productivity, the Labour MP told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme on Tuesday.

Reynolds said a Labour government would reboot the economy through planning reforms, creating a new industrial strategy, greater ambition on net zero climate targets, making the post-Brexit relationship with the EU work better and reforming the controversial apprenticeship levy.

Pressed on whether Labour would have to make spending cuts to some departments, he said: “The answer is not to cut things. It’s to make the economy grow more strongly.”
