Yemen’s Houthis militant group have fired a missile at a UK registered cargo ship in the Red Sea causing “catastrophic” damage.
A Houthis military spokesman Yahya Sare’e said the Rubymar “ship suffered catastrophic damages and came to a complete halt.
“As a result of the extensive damage the ship suffered, it is now at risk of potential sinking in the Gulf of Aden.”
The Yemeni militants have also claimed to have shot down a US drone at the port city of Hodeidah.
The UK’s Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) on Sunday that an incident was reported 35 nautical miles south of the town, Al Mukha, on Yemen’s Red Sea coast.
The UKMTO said the cargo vessel was damaged after “an explosion in close proximity to the vessel,” adding that “authorities are investigating.”
The Rubymar is a Belize flagged, Lebanese operated UK registered cargo vessel and it believe to have been travelling through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait which connect to the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
