Costco Wholesale Corporation has recently announced its ambitious plans for 2024. While this retail giant currently has 875 warehouses in 14 countries, it will be adding several more this year. Although it opened 23 new warehouses in 2023, it is looking to add even more this fiscal year.
New Costco Locations in 2024
According to Business Insider, it is opening 31 new Costco locations this year and relocating two more. While 24 of these warehouses are located in the United States, it also includes 7 new international warehouses. The addition of these new stores will push the total number over the 900 mark. These plans are by far some of the most ambitious to date.
Keep in mind that Costco’s fiscal year doesn’t follow the typical calendar year. With its fiscal year starting in September, it has already opened 10 new locations in the first quarter alone. These initial openings include one relocation, eight warehouses in the U.S., and one in Canada.
Although it has yet to reveal all the new locations, here are the current location announcements and projected opening dates.

- Natomas, CA – March 2024
- Loomis, CA – April 2024
- North Port, FL – May 2024
- Mt. Juliet, TN – May 2024

As you’ll notice, this list doesn’t include every new warehouse. This is because Costco does not confirm any location information until three months before the open date. We will continue to update the list as new locations are announced.
Other Big Announcements from Costco
New Leadership
In addition to the rapid expansion plans, Costco has also had a few other headline announcements this year. This retail giant will have new leadership at its helm. After 11 years, CEO Craig Jelinek announced in October 2023 that he was stepping down from the position. Ron Vachris has taken over as his successor and has had a warm reception to his new role. Vachris has been with the company for more than 40 years, beginning his career as a forklift driver and working his way through senior management. His humble beginning and hands-on experience have made the transition easier its employees as the company navigates this transition.
The First Super Store
While many of its competitors have already built “super” stores, Costco is looking to add the first flagship location to its fleet. Plans for the largest location yet are already in the works for its warehouse in Fresno, California. Once completed, the new facility will measure 240,000 square feet, making it the largest store worldwide.
Increased Membership Fees
For several years now, Costco has been hinting that an increase in membership fees will be coming. Many have been waiting for the official announcement. However, it seems they will have to wait a little longer. Following its quarterly earnings call back in December, CFO Richard Galanti discussed the plans for the projected price hike. Although he said it isn’t happening now, “it’s a matter of when, not if” membership fees will increase.
This has been the standard response over the last several years. But historically speaking, Costco is overdue for a price increase. This typically occurs somewhere between the 5 and 6-year mark. However, the last increase occurred in June 2017. Therefore, we can probably assume it will be happening sooner rather than later.
Suggest a New Costco Location
Do you wish that there was a Costco store near you or someone that you love? Although they may not be opening any new locations close to you in 2024, Costco is always thinking ahead to potential new stores. And they’re always open to suggestions about where to open them.
If you want to suggest a new Costco location, there are three ways you can do so:
- Download the Costco app. On iPhones, select “More” from the app, then select “App Feedback.” From there, you can suggest a new store, providing the zip code of the desired location, if possible. On Android devices, go to the main menu to find the “Feedback” option.
- If you don’t want to download the app, then you can still suggest a new Costco location from your phone. Go to the Costco website on your phone’s browser. Scroll to the bottom of the home page. Then select “Feedback” and ask for your desired store location.
- Of course, you can also give feedback on the main website from your laptop or desktop computer. Go to the store’s home page. Look on the right side of the screen. You should see a blue tab for “Feedback.” Let them know where you’d like to see them open a new Costco store.

In total, there are 875 locations throughout the world. Of these, 272 are located outside of the United States. Of these, more than 100 Costco stores exist in Canada. There are also locations in the United Kingdom, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Australia, Mexico, Spain, Iceland, France, and China.
You’ll find 603 Costco locations in the United States and Puerto Rico. However, four of the states in the US do not have any Costco locations: Maine, Rhode Island, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Costco is especially prevalent in California.
In total, there are about 72.0 Million Costco members in the United States and 129.5 Million cardholders. Costco employs 316,000 full-time and part-time employees around the world.

It is important to note that Costco does close on some holidays. In the US, holiday store closures typically include:

Additionally, Costco may change hours on or near certain holidays. For example, check for non-standard operating hours on Black Friday and Christmas Eve.
