Cold Weather Payments have been triggered in up to 148 areas, the DWP has announced.
More than 200,000 people will receive the support, which is targeted at low-income households to help with heating bills which were run up during last week’s bitter cold snap.
Residents in the 148 postcode areas will receive the £25 payments after the Met Office confirmed that they endured subzero temperatures for seven consecutive days.
The new payments confirmed this morning will affect postcodes in parts of Greater Manchester, Suffolk, Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Essex, Carlisle and Powys in Wales.
They follow on from the announcement of payments to over 210,000 people in other parts of England and Wales which was made last week.
You can see the payments on our interactive map here.
In total, more than 1.18 million Cold Weather Payments have now been triggered so far this winter – costing the DWP around £29.5million.
Some postcode areas in the Lake District have had three payments, meaning eligible recipients there will have been paid £75 towards their heating bills this winter.
Cold Weather Payments are triggered during cold spells between November 1 and March 31, when the Met Office confirms that the average temperature is zero degrees or below for seven consecutive days at a particular weather station.
The payments are made to people in England and Wales who receive a range of benefits including Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Universal Credit, Support for Mortgage Interest.
Not everyone on these benefits will automatically receive a Cold Weather Payment. There are a number of factors which will determine whether a payment will be made and full details of those eligible are here.
A separate scheme is operated in Northern Ireland along similar lines but in Scotland, the support for heating bills is not linked to specific spells of cold weather.
Temperatures fell to below minus 9C in some parts of England and Wales in the middle of last week and payments were triggered for 210,000 people on January 13 for the week running up to January 19 based on Met Office forecasts.
The payments announced today are for the same time period and were made after experts at five weather stations examined the data and found that temperatures in those areas also averaged zero degrees or below.
