The Leamington Flyers’ defence has added some experience.

After a surprise run to the conference final in the team’s first year in the Ontario Junior Hockey League, the Flyers have made defenceman Owen MacDonald the team’s first off-season addition.

The 19-year-old MacDonald has played parts of three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with the Sarnia Sting.

“We expect Owen to have an immediate impact on our team,” Flyers’ general manager Justin Solcz said in a release. “He is a quality player with excellent character and valuable OHL experience and he will be a significant asset in our dressing room.”

The six-foot, 170-pound MacDonald previously played against the Flyers as a member of the Sarnia Legionnaire when the two teams were members of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League in 2021-22.

The Sting took MacDonald with the 46th pick in the 2021 OHL U18 Draft. In parts of three seasons with the Sting, MacDonald appeared in 85 regular-season games and picked up six assists while also getting into 14 playoff games. He as averaged 15 minutes of ice time per game.

“Leamington has the hockey culture and community support I was looking for,” MacDonald, who is from Corunna, said in a release. “The crowds are amazing and the team’s goals align with mine in that we want to be playing for a championship this year. I couldn’t be more excited to play here and hep the team make their mark on the OJHL.”

Brown-Fazekas joins Saints.

The St. Clair Saints are bringing another area player back home to join the men’s basketball team for the 2024-25 season.

Kennedy high school product Kyle Brown-Fazekas is transferring to St. Clair from Humber College after two seasons.

“Coach (Brendon) Seguin and I are very excited to bring another local talent back home,” Saints’ co-coach Matt Sykes said in a release. “This is another case of perfect timing for our program as we lost a few of our key veteran pieces from previous years and he will be able to slide right into a major role.”

A six-foot guard, Brown-Fazekas was an OCAA West Division all-rookie team selection in 2022-23 and was named the West Division’s sixth man of the year this past season. He  averaged 11.1 points per game, 5.5 rebounds per game and 2.2 assists per game in 2023-24 while helping Humber to a conference title and bronze medal at the national tournament.

Mulder on move

Catholic Central high school product Mychal Mulder was one of 14 players taken by the Valley Suns in the NBA G League expansion draft.

A shooting guard, the 30-year-old Mulder spent this past season with the Capital City Go-Go, which is the Washington Wizards’ affiliate team. The Valley Suns, who ware the affiliate of the Phoenix Suns, will hold Mulder’s rights for two seasons.

The six-foot-three, 195-pound Mulder has spent time in the NBA with the Golden State Warriors, Orlando Magic and Miami Heat.

The University of Kentucky product was an NBA G League first-round pick by Windy City in 2017 and has also spent time with Sioux Falls, Lakeland and Memphis.
