Several cities in Quebec have announced the early opening of swimming pools and splash pads as a mass of hot air is expected in the province starting Tuesday.
Environment Canada is forecasting maximum temperatures between 30 C and 34 C followed by minimums above 20 C starting Tuesday. By Tuesday afternoon, the combined temperature and humidity values will produce a humidex reading of around 42.

In the city of Longueuil, five swimming pools have opened early, starting Saturday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
As for the Plateau Mont-Royal borough in Montreal, a social media post says the swimming pool and paddling pool at Laurier Park will open early as of Tuesday.
The city of Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville also announced to its residents that the Roberval swimming pool and paddling pool will be open from Monday, in view of the warm weather. The spash pads at the Aviateurs and Quincy-sous-Sénart parks will also open Monday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
In Laval, as of Saturday, six swimming pools were opened early, as well as 10 splash pads.
“It’s a very nice coincidence,” said Philippe Déry, head of public affairs for the city of Laval. “We have been aiming for several years to have an early opening of certain pools and certain water features.”
No activities planned for next week have been cancelled in Laval, but the city will be closely monitoring developments.
The city of Laval recommends that citizens cool off as much as possible and try to spend a few hours in an air-conditioned or shaded place, in addition to paying particular attention to children and the elderly.
The Quebec government suggests, among other things, planning physical activities during the cooler periods of the day and applying wet cloths to the face, arms and neck several times a day.
The European Union’s climate service said last month was the hottest May on record, capping 12 consecutive months of record average monthly temperatures amid high and growing concerns about global warming.
