The City of Edmonton is helping people get hydrated this summer.

The city announced Monday its latest expansion of a water bottle filling program to support vulnerable Edmontonians during extreme heat.

The program first launched in 2021 with five water bottle filling stations and has now expanded to 27 stations across Edmonton. The sites were selected based on engagement with businesses, communities and agencies.

These new installations complement the 24 permanent water fountains in transit centres and LRT stations.

“The expansion of the water bottle filling stations program is crucial in our efforts to safeguard our city’s most vulnerable residents,” said Hani Quan, director of affordable housing and homelessness, in a release.

“By enhancing the accessibility of safe, free potable drinking water, we are addressing a key need for those most at risk during extreme heat conditions.”

Edmontonians enjoy being outdoors in the summertime, taking in festivals and exploring the river valley. It’s also a busy time for construction work.

“Cyclists and outdoor workers are particularly vulnerable to extreme heat, as they often face direct sun exposure for prolonged periods,” said Ward Metis Coun. Ashley Salvador in a release.

“Providing accessible water stations is essential for keeping these groups hydrated and safe during the hottest days. This initiative highlights our commitment to promoting a healthy, active lifestyle while safeguarding the well-being of our community during heat waves.”
