Two people have been charged with assaulting a Saskatoon police officer after what city police described as “a significant struggle.”

On Saturday around 7 a.m., members of the Saskatoon police bike unit saw smoke coming from an area by the river downtown near Kiwanis Memorial Park. According to police in a news release, officers saw a man and a woman sitting by an open fire, and stopped to investigate a “possible bylaw violation.”

According to police, while being questioned by the officers the pair “became combative” and started attacking the officers, trying to disarm them and inflicting “minor injuries.”

After what police describe as “a significant struggle,” both the man and woman were taken into custody, and are now facing charges that include four counts of assaulting a peace officer, and two counts of attempting to take a weapon.

The man has also been charged with multiple counts of drug possession, as well as breach of court conditions.
