re: Parents fight for pediatric hospital service improvements (Brian MacLeod, July 20, 2023)

Thank you to the pediatricians, family health teams and family physicians who wrote letters supporting additional pediatric services in local hospitals.

Thank you for acknowledging and validating the emotional and financial burdens faced by so many families because our babies and kids need to seek emergency and ongoing care in another country or hours away. Thank you for recognizing and acknowledging the need for so much more.

I hope one day OHIP can spend in Windsor-Essex County the millions of dollars it’s currently costing annually to send more than 425 of our kids on monthly trips to London Health Sciences Centre; the roughly six pediatric patients who are sent to DMC Children’s Hospital in Michigan every month; and the roughly three pediatric patients sent to Toronto’s SickKids every month, so they can get the care they need here instead.

Since 2013, OHIP has spent an average of just under US$3 million annually on Windsor-Essex infants and children to receive emergency care in the U.S.
