Douglas Ross will stand down as the leader of the Scottish Conservatives after the upcoming election, he has announced.

Last week, he announced a decision to stand in the election, reversing an earlier decision to step down to focus on his role in the Scottish Parliament.

Ross, the former MSP for the Highlands and Islands, said on Monday he will carry on in the leadership role until after the election.

In a statement, Ross added that if he is elected to parliament in July he will also stand down as an MSP to make way for another Scottish Conservative representative in Holyrood.

“I have served as MP, MSP and leader for over three years now and believed I could continue to do so if re-elected to Westminster, but on reflection, that is not feasible,” Ross said.
