Former Alberta cabinet minister and deputy premier Leela Aheer has been denied the chance to run for the Conservative Party of Canada in the Calgary Signal Hill riding.
In a video posted to X on Thursday evening, Aheer said her application to run in the constituency’s nomination contest was “declined.”
“To the residents of Signal Hill, thank you so much for welcoming me into your homes and hearts. Your support has meant absolutely the world to me,” she said. “While my journey as a candidate may have ended here, I wish the very best to the remaining candidates.”

Aheer said she sold more than 1,000 party memberships during her campaign. She did not provide an explanation as to why the party turned down her application.
Postmedia reached out to Aheer and the party for comment but did not receive a response.
Current Calgary Signal Hill MP Ron Liepert, whose represented the riding since its creation in 2015, announced last February that he would not seek re-election.
A handful of candidates are still vying to replace Liepert, including former provincial cabinet minister Jeremy Nixon, Wyatt Claypool, Michael Kim, Dean Mikalauskas and David McKenzie.
The date for the nomination meeting is still to be determined, according to the constituency association’s website.
