Bonn (dpa) – Around 6,000 experts from almost all the world’s countries are meeting in Bonn for the annual conference of the UNFCCC secretariat. During the course of the ten-day meeting, the delegates will prepare for the next UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) that will be taking place next November in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku.

One central topic at the conference will be the question of how to fund climate action. Since 2009, the target has been for industrialised countries to provide poorer countries with billions of euros in support each year. This target was confirmed in the 2015 Paris Agreement and extended to 2025. The question now is what will happen after 2025.

The international community had agreed in Paris in 2015 to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees compared to pre-industrial levels. At COP28 in Dubai last year, it was decided in particular to expand renewable energies with a view to achieving the 1.5 degree target. Now it is mainly a question of the concrete steps that will be taken to achieve the targets. The next UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) will be held from 11 November to 22 November 2024 in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.
