Transition star Shane Simpson has been traded by the Calgary Roughnecks.

The National Lacrosse League team made the move Thursday to acquire defenceman Griffin Hall and two draft picks from the Las Vegas Desert Dogs.

“Griffin is a big, strong young defender with plenty of upside,” said Roughnecks GM Mike Board. “We’re excited to be able to add a player of his quality and character to the Roughnecks.

“I would also like to thank Shane for his contributions to the Roughnecks over the past six seasons and wish him continued success in his career.”

The speedy Simpson was a finalist for NLL Transition Player of the Year after a superb 2023-24 campaign.

He was selected by the Roughnecks in the first round — sixth overall — of the 2018 NLL Draft and led the league’s defencemen this past regular season in points with 28 — including 18 goals. He also sniped a pair of power-play goals.

The move also includes a swap of draft picks — a first-rounder in the 2024 NLL Draft and a sixth-rounder in the 2025 NLL Draft coming to Calgary, while the Desert Dogs fetch the Roughnecks’ third-round pick in 2027.

Hall, a native of Victoria, B.C., was drafted by the Dogs in the second round — 24th overall — in the 2022 NLL Draft.

The 22-year-old made his NLL debut in 2022-23, scooping 21 loose balls and tallying seven blocked shots in 12 games that campaign. In 2023-24, he recorded two assists, five caused turnovers and another seven blocked shots.

With this trade, the Roughnecks now have two first-round picks, including the fifth and 14th selections, in the 2024 NLL Draft set for September.
