Potsdam (dpa) – Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has spoken of the possibility of Germany participating in a protection force for the Gaza Strip. “Just as we have made it clear to Ukraine that we will stand up for freedom and peace in that country, I believe the same applies to the Middle East. If what is needed now is not just reconstruction, but an international protection force to guarantee that we can finally, after all this time, achieve peace in the Middle East, then that must be our shared mission,” said Baerbock on Saturday at a small party conference of her party, The Greens, in Potsdam.

A humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza war is within the realms of possibility, said Baerbock, adding that it would have to include a cessation of Hamas attacks, the release of Israeli hostages and an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
