A 35-year-old man died early Sunday after the speeding motorcycle he was driving slammed into a concrete barrier at Stadium Road in north Edmonton, say police.

The man was heading east on 107A Avenue onto Stadium Road about 12:35 a.m. when he lost control of the bike, unable to navigate the bend near 111 Avenue, and struck the concrete barrier, said police in a later news release. He flew off the bike after hitting the barrier on the southeast side of Stadium Road, suffering fatal injuries.

Paramedics responding to the scene declared the man dead.

Major collision investigators said speed was a significant factor in the crash.

Dangerous time of year for bikers

The death comes just days after Edmonton police warned motorcyclists to be more vigilant on area roads.

“We want to get the message out like we do every year to have people fresh into their motorcycle riding season to start out slow and be aware of road conditions. If there is still sand and gravel on the streets, it can be dangerous,” Sgt. Kerry Bates, with the police traffic safety unit, said last week.
