The Toronto Blue Jays are back in action Tuesday for the second contest of a three-game series with the White Sox in Chicago after taking the series opener 5-1 on Monday.

Davis Schneider, George Springer, and Bo Bichette all homered for the Blue Jays and Chris Bassitt tossed five scoreless innings to help the Jays halt a three-game losing streak.

Chicago has now lost six straight games and owns the worst record in baseball at 15-40.

Betting Toronto Blue Jays (24-29 SU, 26-27 ATS, 22-31 o/u)

The Blue Jays desperately needed a win on Monday against the lowly White Sox and they responded with a convincing 5-1 road victory. After losing three straight games to the Detroit Tigers over the weekend, there was immense pressure for Toronto to get back on track against an inferior opponent. Taking at least two of three from Chicago is crucial if Toronto hopes to get trending in the right direction back towards the .500 mark.

Shortstop Bo Bichette stayed hot for Toronto on Monday, slugging his third homer of the season. Hopefully, you read Monday’s betting preview and cashed in our recommended wager of him going yard and recording over 1.5 total bases. Bo has 10 hits over his last six games and is slashing a very respectable .291/.330/.442 in May after a slow start.

Toronto’s horrific bullpen held the fort on Monday, surrendering just one run over four innings of work. Right-hander Erik Swanson was taken deep by Gavin Sheets in the eighth inning, inflating his ERA to 9.22 after five consecutive scoreless outings.  Trevor Richards, Jordan Romano, Tim Mayza, and Yimi Garcia weren’t used on Monday, so manager John Schneider does have some flexibility with his bullpen for Tuesday’s game.

Betting Chicago White Sox (15-40 SU, 23-32 ATS, 24-29-2 o/u)

The White Sox surrendered three more long balls Monday to bring their league-leading total to 77 through 55 games. Chicago pitchers have a combined 4.71 ERA (29th in the majors) and the team is allowing 5.1 runs per game (28th in baseball).

Offensively, the team has been held to a single run in each of its last two games. On Monday, the White Sox went just 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and they stranded 11 runners. Their 2.9 runs scored per game is the lowest mark in MLB and they’ll likely continue to struggle at the plate until Yoan Moncada, Eloy Jimenez, and Luis Robert return from the injured list.

Probable starting pitchers

Toronto: RHP Kevin Gausman (3-3, 4.47 ERA, 9.87 K/9, 1.43 WHIP)

Gausman allowed just one run on three hits while striking out 10 Tigers last time he took the mound. He’s off to a slow start by his standards, but he’s been striking out more batters recently. After recording just 17 strikeouts in five April starts, Gausman has already fanned 30 batters in four May outings across 20 1/3 innings. This will be his first start against the White Sox this season.

Chicago: RHP Mike Clevinger (0-3, 6.75 ERA, 8.44 K/9, 1.94 WHIP)

Clevinger will be making just his fifth start of the season and he’s coming off a rough outing against the Baltimore Orioles who pounded him for five earned runs and seven hits over 4 2/3 innings. He threw a season-high 98 pitches in that outing, though, which means he shouldn’t have any limitations on Tuesday. The once-promising right-hander has been plagued with injuries in recent years, and he’s lost the feel for his slider this season. Batters are hitting .636 and slugging .818 against the pitch which he throws roughly 19% of the time. The average velocity on his fastball is down to 93.3 mph from 94.3 mph last season.

Weather

Weather could play a factor in this game as there’s a 80% chance of rain throughout the evening hours. Temperatures will be around 16 C with winds blowing out to right field at nine mph.

MLB betting trends

  • The White Sox are 0-6 straight-up and 0-6 on the runline in their last six games.
  • The Blue Jays have been favourites 33 times this season and won just 18 of those games (54.5%).
  • Toronto has hit the team total under in 31 of its last 52 games.

MLB player prop trends

  • Clevinger has posted exactly five strikeouts in each of his last three starts. He’s +120 to record over 4.5 strikeouts.
  • Blue Jays third baseman Isiah Kiner-Falefa is taking a six-game hitting streak into action Tuesday. He’s -240 to record a hit.
  • Davis Schneider has driven in at least one run in four straight games. He’s +150 to do it again Tuesday.

Blue Jays vs. White Sox predictions

  • It’s been a miserable season for Springer but he’s coming off a multi-hit performance and has great career numbers against Clevinger: 6-for-13, two home runs, three RBIs. Take him to record over 1.5 total bases at +130 odds.
  • Blue Jays to lead after five innings: -140. This cashed Monday so let’s roll it back again. Toronto has an edge in the starting pitching matchup, but its bullpen can’t be trusted to hold leads right now. Gausman should hold Chicago to just a run or two over five or six innings and the Blue Jays should plate at least a handful of runs early against Clevinger. It’s also possible we see a rain delay, which means both bullpens could play a bigger factor than usual in this game.
