The chart quiz was pretty easy last week, with few of you needing the extra day. Here’s what readers were tasked to identify:

Line chart of % showing Chart 1

. . . that’s the 12-month rate of services CPI inflation in the United Kingdom, which might bring to mind the Blackadder quote “We’re in the stickiest situation since Sticky the Stick Insect got stuck on a sticky bun” but also might just be completely fine.

Line chart of $ showing Chart 2

. . . that’s the price of copper (specifically the generic Comex futures contract, scaled for 100 contracts, not that we were being fussy). Copper’s second mention in MainFT is always “the red metal”, which we would suggest is contingent even within the usual fuzzy parameters of colour perception.

Line chart of GBp showing Chart 3

. . . and that’s the share price of Hargreaves Lansdown, the investment platform that has received recent takeover interest. A few years ago Alphaville was talking to founder and major shareholder Peter Hargreaves about prospects for the stock market, and he said that multi-property investment is a trap, so we just thought we’d share that advice in case it’s of use to any readers.

Lots of you got all three. Congratulations to Sean McPherson, Alistair Bill, James Memon, David Lynch, Karthik Tadinada, Arvin Vaghela, James Klikis, Kat Lai, Charles de Nobrega, Ben O’Dwyer, Sean Jordan, Jen Chen, Daniel Noel, Anthony Cheng, Matt Dawson, Atiyu Mehta, Eden Gray, Sid Pai, Tyler Yarnell, Dan Boardman-Weston, Matthew Ember and Theo Morris Clarke.

But there can only be one winner. To the spinner . . .

. . . congratulations to David Lynch, investment director at Sidra Capital! David takes the T-shirt and the glory, and everyone else gets another go this Friday. And, hey, that’s only three days away.
