Regina Red Sox

The Regina Red Sox began the 2024 Western Canadian Baseball League season with a pair of wins on the weekend.

On Saturday at Currie Field, the Saskatoon Berries made the trip to Regina, but it was the Red Sox spoiling the expansion franchise’s debut as the home squad won 5-4.

Then On Sunday, Regina made it two in a row as they blanked the Berries 3-0. Colton Anderson allowed just one hit over 6.2 innings to pick up the victory. Kody Hanna led the way offensively for Regina, batting 4-of-6 with four RBIs over two games.

The Red Sox will now travel to Saskatoon for a rematch against the Berries on Tuesday. Regina will then host the Lethbridge Bulls on Thursday and Friday, with both games getting underway at 7 p.m.

Regina Riot

The Regina Riot picked up a 27-20 win over the Manitoba Fearless on Sunday at Leibel Field to wrap up the Western Women’s Canadian Football League regular season schedule.

Shanelle Rioux scored two touchdowns for the Riot — who borrowed the Regina Thunder’s jerseys after their uniforms were stolen last week — while Eve Neithercut also found the end zone on a 50-plus yard run. Aimee Kowalski threw a pass to Jocelyn King-McGillivray for the Riot’s fourth touchdown on the day.

With a 2-2 record, the Riot secured second place in the Prairie Conference and will now face an Alberta team in the WWCFL semifinals.

The Riot will also continue to be on the lookout for the rest of their stolen jerseys after some were in the Cathedral area on the weekend, while hangers were found behind the Golden Mile shopping centre, according to a social media update by the team.

Senior Bowl

The 38th annual Senior Bowl was held on Sunday at Mosaic Stadium with Team South beating Team North 58-12 in the high school football showcase game.

Quarterback Connor Kerr was named MVP for Team South while linebacker Noah Percival was MVP for Team North.

Offensive lineman Tristen Rapchalk, receiver Kyle Conteh, defensive lineman Liam LaBelle, linebacker Jacob Goldstone and defensive back Spencer Remple were the top players at their position for Team South.

Regina Pats

The Regina Pats are back on the ice this week as the Western Hockey League club will host its annual spring development camp at the Cooperators Centre.

There will be 31 prospects born in 2007, 2008 and 2009 taking part in the camp, which will begin when players report on Thursday.

The group — which features 17 forwards, 11 defencemen and three goalies — will be split up into smaller groups before hitting the ice on Friday (1:15 p.m. and 7 p.m.) and Saturday (11 a.m. and 6 p.m.).

Curling change

CurlSask has made a format change to its men’s and women’s provincial playdowns as the SaskTel Tankard and Viterra Scotties provincial championships will move from 12 teams to nine teams.

The new round-robin format will be in place for at least the next two seasons before stakeholders decide if it will continue in the future.

Kindersley is set to host both the men’s and women’s playdowns simultaneously in 2025, which marks the first time CurlSask will be hosting a joint provincial championship.

Rugby scores

In local rugby action, the first senior women’s game of the year was played on Thursday as the Regina Ravens edged the Regina Rave 35-34.

In men’s action on Friday, the Regina Rogues topped the Campion Grads 73-7 and the Regina Highlanders beat the Regina Condors 19-15.

Water polo

Several Regina athletes helped qualify Canada’s water polo teams for the World Aquatics Junior World Championships next year.

At the 2024 PanAm Aquatics U19 Championships in El Salvador on the weekend, Regina’s Elias Crichlow and Hamza Mahmoud and the rest of Canada’s men’s under-19 water polo team finished in second place at the event.

The women’s squad — featuring Taya Bumpas, Sydney Krusken, Simone Lapierre and Anna Ulmer — finished in fourth but the result was still good enough to qualify for worlds.
