The responding officers reportedly arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the building; an injured 52-year-old woman and an injured 82-year-old man were both found inside.

Fire departments from La Loche and the nearby Clearwater River Dene Nation put out the fire.

The 52-year-old woman, identified by police as Brenda Toulejour, was pronounced dead at a hospital in La Loche.  The release noted that Toulejour’s family was notified of her death and was offered victim services.

The 82-year-old man was transported to hospital in Saskatoon for treatment. Police did not have any further information on the man’s condition, according to the release.

Investigation by the RCMP’s major crimes unit continues.
