During the student riots of the Vietnam era, some of the students at University of Notre Dame in Indiana took over the office of the university president, Theodore M Hesburgh, a renowned advocate of liberal values (“Biden condemns students over Columbia occupation”, Report, May 1).

Father Hesburgh, an American Catholic priest and academic, announced — after he was evicted from the building — that any students remaining in his office 15 minutes from the time of his announcement would be expelled from the university. At the end of 15 minutes, no student remained.

That was the end of student protests at Notre Dame.

This episode underlines the fact there is more than one way for liberals, who happen to be in charge, to treat protesting undergraduates.
