PWHL Ottawa let a second chance to clinch a playoff spot slip away.

Ottawa, which could have locked up a spot in the inaugural post-season with a victory at home against powerhouse Montreal on Saturday, instead dropped that matinée by a 2-0 score. On the road Tuesday night against last-place New York, the visitors scored the only two goals of the first period and looked to be in good position, but collapsed in the second, giving up four goals in less than nine minutes on the way to a 4-3 loss at the Prudential Center.

The regulation loss dropped Ottawa’s record to 8-1-6-8, leaving it at 32 points with a game remaining. Boston (7-4-3-9) also sits at 32 points with a game remaining, but Ottawa does hold the tiebreaker for the fourth and final playoff position.

Boston finishes the regular season at home to Montreal on Saturday afternoon while Ottawa will wrap things up with a game in Toronto on Sunday night.

Akane Shiga’s second goal of the season got Ottawa started five minutes and 12 seconds into the game and Hayley Scamurra, with her fifth, made it 2-0 at 14:24.

By the time the first period ended, Ottawa owned a 17-7 edge in shots on goal.

Things began to turn around at 7:24 of the second when Jade Downie-Landry got New York on the scoreboard and less than two minutes later, at 9:16, Ella Shelton tied the game. Kayla Vespa gave the home team its first lead at 12:20 and Elizabeth Giguère brought the score to 4-2 at 15:57.

Ottawa made it close late, with Daryl Watts notching her ninth of the season with just 59 seconds left in the third.

Emerance Maschmeyer was in goal for Ottawa, which finished the game with a 36-29 edge in shots on goal, while Corinne Schroeder got the win for New York, which improved to 4-4-3-12.

ICE CHIPS: There was a season-high, sell-out crowd of 8,452 for Ottawa’s final home game of the regular season Saturday. The team played all 12 of its home games at The Arena at TD Place, including seven games with more than 8,000 fans, for a league-high average of 7,496 per game, the PWHL stated on its website. … Ottawa is now on a two-game skid after the loss to Montreal ended a season-high four-game winning streak. … Tuesday’s game featured the league’s two best power plays, the PWHL website stated, and coming into it Ottawa had outshot opponents in 14 games, tied for the league lead. … Ottawa’s Brianne Jenner entered the game fifth in league scoring with 19 points (nine goals). … Maschmeyer came into the game having won nine of her 20 starts, with two shutouts, and a 2.17 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage.
